The number of Japanese restaurants opened overseas increased to 187,000
The number of Japanese restaurants opening overseas continues to increase. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, in 2023, the number of stores in China and other parts of the world reached 187,000, an increase of about 20% from the last survey in 2021. The number is more than three times that of 55,000 in 2013, 10 years ago. Delicious and healthy Japanese food "washoku" has been favored, restaurant chains have gone to sea, and the popularity of Japanese anime in Central and South America has also helped.
From a regional perspective, North America was affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, which decreased by about 10% from 2021 to 28,600, while Asia 122,000 and Europe 16,400, both increased by about 20%. Hopes are growing that restaurants will spread Japanese cuisine to the rest of the world, driving exports of Japanese agricultural and aquatic products and ingredients.
Japan's restaurant giants have also gone out to explore the market. Royal Holdings' chain "TENYA Tenya" entered Thailand in 2013, plus China, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Singapore, and now has a total of 30 stores in five countries and regions.
Tempura's gentle coating and salty, sweet dip are well received overseas. In Thailand, it is also seasoned with a sauce of spicy stir-fried minced meat, a local home-cooked dish, or catfish tempura and other dishes that suit local tastes.
